How Can We Have Free Kates Playground
THE DAWN OF A NEW SPECIES
Dj’ing has undergone some mind blowing changes over the years.
From 8 track tape, reel to reel, belt drive turntables, direct drive turntables, CD Players, Digital
Vinyl systems, Ableton , pacemaker etc. the list goes on...
While guitars and rock bands have maintained the Status Quo(!) with their six strings, the introduction of technology has dramatically influenced the dj and formed a formidable presence amongst the dance fraternity.
From the mid 90’s Pioneer have been at the forefront this DJ technology.
The CDJ-500 was launched in 1994 and was the first CD player from Pioneer which was built specifically for the club DJ.
originally meant. While the innovative jog dial controlled the pitch bend. I had one (still have) but in reality it could never quite match the tactile feel of the vinyl.
That was until the introduction of the CDJ 1000 in 2001.
This changed the face of DJ’ing has now CD’s could be used in the same way as vinyl plus
more. In 2006 the CDJ- 1000MkIII took the original concept and moonwalked into the main rooms of leading clubs around the world and set the standard to which all other CD players and other technologies try to better.
In the three years since the introduction of the MkIII we have seen the emergence of the Digital DJ.
DJ’s such as Richie Hawtin, Dubfire, Loco Dice, Deadmau5, Sasha and many other DJ’s have embraced digital technologies in an interesting way which threatened the very existence of traditional DJ’ing therefore putting at risk Pioneers’ domination of club land.
From 17th September 2009 Pioneer hope to claw back the Tsunami towards digital dj’ing with the
arrival of their latest Player (name still unknown). CDJ-2000 or plain old CDJ-1000 MK IV as it may be called, is rumoured to herald amongst many other things the entrance of Pioneer into the DJ software market.
The Pioneer hype machine has kicked into action this month with a vague and mysterious back cover advert in the September issue
of Mixmag and a couple teasers on the dj sounds website where CDJ wizards James Zebiela and Armin Van Buuren hint at what to expect from the new player.
So what innovations do you expect to find or want in this new player? Can this player topple the rise of the likes of Traktor, Serato or Ableton? Or is this a case of too little too late for Pioneer?
See www.djsounds.com/category/dawn-of-a-new-species for details.
